If you are looking for self catering village cottages in Wiltshire read the testimonials of guests who have visited Coachmans Cottage and see the excellence of this Cottage and Village for yourself…..
This is one of the best cottages we have ever visited and the welcome pack was more than we have ever received anywhere, all the basics for the first day provided. The cottage is immaculate and very comfortable.
We agree with all the reviews that the owner, Penny, was very helpful giving us details of places to visit and, more importantly, not to visit. The latter sometimes too late, but useful to know for subsequent visits.
The village pub, a proper village local, provided excellent food during the course of our week in the charming village of Steeple Ashton. The locality is a good area for sightseeing with many places worth visiting, including Wells, Frome, Sherborne, Bruton and, if you like touristy places,Bath. For another visit we will try to book for a summer month when there will be opportunities to sit outside in the pretty courtyard garden.
Response: Thank you for your review. Not too many guests visit Bruton, but it is interesting that you ventured there. We are happy to pass on our knowledge of this area when asked. We look forward to welcoming you back to Coachmans Cottage one day in the future.
A beautifully furnished and very comfortable cottage in a delightful village. It was lovely to come back to after a day out in inclement weather! Penny and her father Peter keep the cottage in immaculate condition and are delightful hosts . The surrounding area has a lot to offer in rain, wind or sun. The walk from Bratton up to the White Horse is well worth the effort. We will be returning. Thank you. Sylvia and Colin
Response: Thank you for your review, yes we have some delightful walks in the area and I am pleased that you found one of them. See you next year. Best, Penny.
A wonderful holiday awaits you when you come to stay at the Coachmans Cottage. From the moment we arrived in the picturesque village of Steeple Ashton and were shown around the charming cottage we were excited to be staying for several days. The owner, Penny, was so lovely helping us settle in, showing us around the cottage and giving us interesting ideas and information about the local area and places to visit. Even before we arrived Penny was quick to respond to our emails when booking and had also arranged a reservation for us at the nearby village tavern on our first evening. The Cottage has everything you could need to relax and enjoy your stay from extra comfy beds, fluffy towels, bathrobes to a fully equipped, although compact kitchen and bathroom. There are so many delightful extras included which made this such a homely place to stay; from homemade cake and marmalade, fresh bread, milk, butter and eggs, to useful extras including fully stocked basics of hand soap, cleaning essentials, sewing kit and interesting books and games. Even though our stay was in February the cottage remained cosy and warm throughout and although we didn’t need to use them, extra blankets were available and an easy to use electric fire. The cottage has a delightful window seat from which I enjoyed hand writing postcards and watching birds come and go including wrens scurrying around the courtyard for food. Steeple Ashton has a magnificent church and an original village holding cell on the green but is also a great base to visit the many and varied attractions, cities, villages and stunning walks which surround you. We can highly recommend Bath, Caen Locks, Stonehenge, Devizes and Bradford on Avon. A much needed holiday and we are looking forward to returning. Thank you.
Response: Oh my goodness, thank you for such a glowing review. I am really at a loss for words to reply, only to say that we very much look forward to welcoming you back soon. Best, Penny
Penny gave us a wonderful welcome with brownies, fresh bread and home made marmalade. The cottage is lovely, clean and warm and very well equipped. It was a perfect base to explore Wiltshire and admire the splendour of Salisbury, the beauty of Bath and the ancient ambience of Avebury. Thoroughly recommended.
Response: Thank you for the review. I am very pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Coachmans and found plenty to do and see over the Christmas/New Year break. We hope to see you again one day in warmer weather. Best, Penny.
We so enjoyed our holiday at Coachmans – a real retreat from the hustle & bustle of today. Penny & Peter are perfect hosts – very welcoming & knowledgeable about the area. The cottage itself is perfection & was ideal for us. We really appreciated the bread, home made marmalade , chocolate cake & other provisions – what a thoughtful touch. Steeple Ashton is a beautiful village & it’s location ideal for reaching Bath, Trowbridge etc. We do hope to return in the future. Thanks Penny & Peter & Merry Christmas to you all.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay. We are very pleased that you loved the area and look forward to welcoming you back one day. Best, Penny
First time I’ve holidayed in Wiltshire and therefore first time at this cottage. for me and my “girls”, Fleur and Lottie-Lola. I have nothing but praise – everything was perfect and immaculately clean. For somebody who is such a bad sleeper, it was heaven to sleep six nights in a row without waking up – bed and pillows were divine. There is everything you need at this cottage and the hosts, Peter and Penny, were wonderful – there if you needed them but otherwise I was left in my own little idyll. Home-made marmalade and shortbread biscuits were scrummy! Loved Wiltshire and local community – everybody was so friendly. Will definitely return. BTW, Long Arms pub just down the road was also a 10/10. Also, “Sign of the Angel” at Lacock, had a wonderful lunch there and dog friendly. What more could a girl want!
Response: Thank you for your kind words, and I am so pleased that your visit was such a success. We are already looking forward to welcoming you back next year. Best, Penny.
We had a wonderful holiday at Coachman’s Cottage with Molly our cocker spaniel. The cottage was in a peaceful location, lovely and warm, well equipped and felt like “home from home”. It was a special treat to have Penny and her mum and dad next door; we had some lovely chats and realised what a small world it is! Steeple Ashton is a delightful village; the village shop and (especially) the local pub were well used. We had lots of trips out and enjoyed Bath, Stonehenge, Bradford-on-Avon, Frome and Corsham (a hidden gem) very much. We hope to revisit soon and explore southern Wiltshire.
Response: Thank you for your warm review. I could have quite happily kidnapped the lovely Molly. We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay here and very much look forward to welcoming you back, and we might even have some gems in the south of the county to point you towards. Best, Penny
Steeple Ashton. What an amazing stepping back in time village. Quiet with very friendly people. And then the Coachmans Cottage! Obviously thoughtfully converted. The whole cottage with its colour schemes and, thoughtful prints on walls in every room. Cosy and comfortable. Done with skill and love. Penny and Peter helpful and very caring owners. Enjoyed our conversations with them. The little courtyard ablaze with Peter’s pots of flowers and greenery. A home from home. Probably the best cottage we have ever stayed in – and that has been quite a few! A beautiful part of Wiltshire. So much more to see and explore. We will certainly be back.
Response: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. We are delighted that you were so pleased with the cottage, village and location and very much look forward to welcoming you back next year. Best, Penny.
It was a delight to find Coachmans Cottage hidden in a pretty village in Wiltshire. It is a gem, there is everything you could possibly need and it’s all on one level. Well furnished and decorated with two bedrooms both good sizes. We were greeted by the owner, who took the time to show us around. There were fresh baked bread rolls and a pot of tea waiting for us along with slices of chocolate cake, home made of course. It was ideally placed near to the shop and pub, plenty of places to visit.
Response: I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay with us, and loved the village and exploring the area. We hope to welcome you back to see more one day soon. Best, Penny.
The cottage is perfect, the village is perfect and Peter and Penny are just wonderful, we stayed for just over two weeks and had a great time…and we will be going back at the first opportunity.
Thank you for taking the time to post this glowing review. It was a pleasure to meet you and your family and to hear anecdotes of your life overseas. We have now been welcoming guests to Coachmans Cottage for 14 years but it is still nice to hear that we get things right. We look forward to welcoming you back to Steeple Ashton on your next trip to England. Best, Penny.
We stayed nearly 6 weeks and could have stayed longer. After staying in many cottages in England, we can honestly say this was the best.
Lovely cottage, lovely hosts, lovely village. We participated in several events both in the village and in Edington and recommend doing this if you have time. Hope to return, and have told our friends to come!
Response: Many thank for taking the time to write your review. High praise indeed, very many thanks, and I am so pleased that you managed to take in some local culture. I look forward to your next visit and to meeting some of your friends and family too. Best, Penny.
Lovely cottage and village and could not find better hosts Penny and Peter thanks for all your help and lovely goodies you left. Loads to see around here Avebury and Malmesbury lovely. Once again Penny thanks for all your help we will be back. Your homemade marmalade was lovely as was all the welcome pack.
Response: It was very nice to welcome you back to Coachmans and we look forward to your third visit. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay again this time. Best, Penny.
What a wonderful week we have had staying in this beautiful, cosy cottage, that has felt like home from the start. From the warm welcome, lovely hamper & brownies, comfy beds, friendly villagers, lovely local shop, delicious food at the pub and excellent local knowledge from you Penny, my daughter and I have had a wonderful, memorable holiday. We particularly enjoyed Longleat – as did the monkeys on my car!! Shopping in Bath & wandering around Bradford on Avon & Lacock. Am sure we will return!
Response: Thank you for this warm review and we look forward to welcoming you back to Coachmans Cottage…but will the monkeys get a visit? Best, Penny.
We had a fabulous time in this warm, cosy and very comfortable cottage. We loved Steeple Ashton and felt right at home here after a couple of days! Great central location for trips to Bath, Stonehenge, the Cotswolds & further afield. Thank you Penny, for all the thoughtful tips and details…. We threaten to come back!
The Chalk family
Response: Chalk family, we very much look forward to welcoming you back. It was a pleasure to meet you all. And we are very happy that your stay was such a success. Best, Penny
An exceptional cottage, warm and comfortable with luxuriously comfortable beds, plenty of hot water and personal touches in many of the rooms. We just loved Steeple Ashton and the surrounding area and the village shop had many of our food needs served to us by just lovely, welcoming volunteers. There was much to do and see in and our five days in the area staying in Coachman’ Cottage which provided us with a “flavour” and a wish to return. Thank you Penny for your hospitality and for sharing your cottage with us. Response: I am so pleased that Coachmans Cottage worked well for you both. Steeple Ashton certainly is a very special village. Looking forward to your return visit. Best, Penny
We had a wonderful stay in this lovely cottage. It had a warm and comfortable feel to it, And we had no trouble using all the technology ! Penny and Peter were very welcoming and kind. The village is charming With a fun pub and well stocked village shop down the street. There are so many fun things to do in Wiltshire and bath is an easy 30 minute drive.
Response: I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay in Coachmans Cottage but I had no idea that we have a lot of technology. We look forward to seeing you again in the near future. Best, Penny
This cottage is absolutely beautiful and so cozy, and we loved our stay in the village of Steeple Ashton. We spent 2 months travelling in England, Scotland and Ireland, staying mainly in Air BNB rentals and several other self-catering accommodations like Coachman’s Cottage. Of the many places we rented this was my favorite. The owner was very welcoming and thoughtfully provided cake and breakfast items for us, which was much appreciated. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of living in a small English village for several days. We had not rented a car and so we relied on the bus to get us to Trowbridge to take the train to places we wanted to do tours, such as Bath. A couple of times we had to take a taxi when the timing of the bus didn’t work, but it was totally worth it to be able to stay in such a lovely place. I would love to return some day and stay for a longer time.
Response: I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Coachmans Cottage and Steeple Ashton, we suggest that guests would ideally have a car here as public transport in the village can be a bit erratic but I’m glad you managed. I look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Best, Penny.
We stayed 3 nights in this beautiful cottage, warm and welcoming
feeling when you walk through the door, you won’t want to leave.
Lovely village, great base for exploring the surrounding areas.
It was a pleasure to meet Penny, and enjoyed the welcome pack. Max enjoyed his treats as well.
We would not hesitate in recommending this cottage, and hopefully WE WILL BE BACK
Response: Thank you for your kind words and we hope that you WILL BE BACK too. Best, Penny
We had three nights at Coachman’s Cottage. It was a perfect retreat with all our needs met and more. The cottage is charming and very comfortable. We had a tremendous welcome from Penny and a lovely breakfast hamper and homemade brownies. The village is delightful and everyone so friendly. We shall definately be back.
Response: I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Thank you for your kind words and we look forward to welcoming you back. Best, Penny
Driving into this stunning little village of Steeple Ashton we knew we were in for a treat. It felt like we had wandered on to a nostalgic British film set. Coachmans Cottage really does set the standard for all cottages! Penny and Peter were so welcoming and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The prettily furnished and well equipped cottage was extremely comfortable and the beautiful courtyard garden was so nice to sit in. The lovely box of goodies on our arrival was so lovely! Even our dog was made to feel included as he got a lovely box of treats! The chocolate cake was delicious and made by Penny herself! We were happy that the weather turned chilly so we could make use of the wonderful log fire. From the quaint friendly village shop to the wonderful pub all on the doorstep it made life very easy if we needed anything (we enjoyed the Fish & Chip take away on a Tuesday night from the pub) We also made use of the very tasty and convenient ready meals that Penny supplies in the honesty freezer – what a good idea! The local walks were beautiful and we spotted lots of wildlife, our dog thoroughly enjoyed himself. So many wonderful places of interest nearby and good transport on the doorstep. We look forward to returning to this little piece of bliss as soon as we can! Missing it already. Thank you again for making our stay so delightful.
Response: Susan I really think I will employ you to market Coachmans Cottage, but on a less flippant note I am really please that you enjoyed the Gourmet meals from Ma Cuisine, new for this Autumn. Thank you and we look forward to welcoming you back soon. Best, Penny.
This was our tenth visit to Coachmans Cottage in Steeple Ashton and it goes from strength to strength. We keep coming back because its perfect for our needs. Its in the centre of an interesting part of the UK, very clean, supremely comfortable, safe and secure and has the added benefit of Penny & Peter, who look after us without any fuss. They are on hand if needed and also respect our privacy. We book every year for the following year and have stayed out of season too.
Response: It is always lovely to meet returning guests and we look forward to your next visit in 2018. We have already put “new things” in place since you were here last month and are working on more for the future! Best, Penny
We had a lovely week in this beautifully presented cottage – so many small touches that made it a true home-from-home. It’s bright, cheery, warm and comfortable with great lighting, so a perfect getaway for any time of the year. Lovely village, and with many more places to visit we will return!
Response: Thank you, I am so pleased that the cottage, village and area worked for you and we look forward to welcoming you both back next year. Best, Penny.
We spent a wonderful week at Coachman’s Cottage. Steeple Ashton is a quintessential English village with its Village Green, its Village Shop and the cosy Long’s Arms Pub where we had splendid meals. We liked also the magnificent church, but most of all our lovely and comfortable retreat at Coachman’s Cottage. Penny was a warm-hearted host and cared about our wellbeing. Everything was perfect!
We visited many superb locations, as Stourhead, Salisbury, Heale Gardens, Iford Manor, The Courts, Westwood Manor, Corsham Court, which are all situated in a reasonable distance.
Many thanks, Penny!
Response: Thank you for taking the time to post your glowing review. It was very nice meeting you and the family. I am so pleased that you got to see so much of this lovely area, you did not see it all and I hope that we can tempt you back for more in the future. Best Penny.
What a lovely cottage, efficiently laid out, well equipped and really comfortable. We had a delicious meal in the village pub (would advise booking a table if dining), and the shop is well stocked. There is plenty to see in the area. Taking the train from Trowbridge to Bath was a great recommendation, we loved Lacock, Corsham and also visited Great Chalfield gardens. We felt that we had only scratched the surface and will be back to explore a little more.
Response: Thank you for posting this warm review. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and very much look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. Best, Penny
We arrived at Coachman’s Cottage for a ten day stay in the afternoon and were greeted by Penny. Penny showed us through the cottage and provided us with a hamper and a lovely chocolate cake for afternoon tea, a very nice surprise. The cottage is very well equipped with a very cosy homely feeling – beautifully furnished, has all the necessary appliances, a lovely private courtyard in the front and off-street parking for the car – a pleasure to return to after a days outing. Penny and Peter also have a very informative folder in the cottage of tourist attractions in the local and surrounding areas, which helped us plan our daily outings. The village of Steeple Ashton is very quaint with a village shop, run by very friendly volunteers, and a local pub, The Long Arms, in which we enjoyed great meals. Penny and Peter were very friendly and helpful during our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend the cottage to anyone, and hopefully may visit the area at some future date. Thank you again Penny and Peter for our wonderful stay.
Response: Many thanks for your warm and glowing review. I hope that this will indicate to readers that we aim to give guests an individual product that cannot be found on many of the “On-line Booking Sites”. Added assurance can be gained by our membership of VisitBritain Quality in Tourism, where the cottage is assessed in person every year. We look forward to meeting you again on your future visits to the UK. Best, Penny and Peter
Our stay in Coachmans Cottage was very good! The house was very beautifull, everything we needed were in the house. Penny and Peter were very friendly and give us a lot of advise. Thank you for that.
We recommend this house to everyone.
Response: Thank you for your kind words, it was a delight to meet you and the family from The Netherlands. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your visit to England and hope that we will see you all again in the future. Best, Penny
Welcoming hosts who have done an excellent job of creating a very comfortable self-catering cottage. The cottage is cosy, and well equipped. The kitchen is indeed a galley kitchen, but functional for simple meals, but who does elaborate cooking on holiday? There is plenty of storage in the hall and bedrooms with ample hangers. Although there are two bedrooms, four dining room chairs, two sofas etc, I think if four people stayed in the property, you would need to know them extremely well! The courtyard garden is very well tended and a nice spot for relaxing, although the chairs don’t have cushions. The village pub and shop are good and within easy walking distance. Coachman’s Cottage is in a quiet and peaceful location. A good place to stay for a break.
Response: Many thanks for your kind words. On our welcome page of this website we do state “An idyllic retreat for 2 but fully equipped for 4 guests”, Quality in Tourism at VisitBritain assess all of their members properties annually and one of the criteria is the space for the number of guests accommodated, Coachmans achieves 4* with an added Gold Award for excellence, the actual score is comfortably within the 5* range but the size of the kitchen holds it back to 4*, I am sure that you will agree that the 18′ x 12′ sitting room and 12′ x 8′ master bedroom are both of a very generous size for an old cottage. Good point about the lack of outside cushions, I am looking for these now! I know from your email that you intend to return to Coachmans and I look forward to welcoming you in the future and you will benefit from the new garden cushions. Warm regards, Penny
This is the second time I have stayed at Coachman’s Cottage. Penny and Peter are wonderful hosts, very warm and welcoming. The Cottage is gorgeous and extremely comfortable. The village is quintessentially English with a great pub (fab food) and a marvellous community village shop. It is so well placed for so many outings – and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone – I will stay again I’m sure.
Response: I am so pleased that Coachmans Cottage continues to charm you, and that we are maintaining the standard that you expect. Very many thanks for taking the time to post this review and we look forward to welcoming you back again on your next trip to the UK. Best, Penny
We received a very warm welcome from Penny as we arrived at this lovely, well presented cottage with its charming and totally private courtyard garden. The basket of goodies, including the delicious chocolate cake, was a welcome surprise. The villagers of Steeple Ashton are very friendly and we were lucky to be there for Open Gardens Day…amazing what is behind some of those garden walls. We had a great week and were able to do plenty of walking and easily visit some of the smaller towns and Bath. If we go back to the same area we will definitely be booking in again.
Response: I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and you were clever to time your visit when Steeple Ashton Gardens were open, a bi-annual event. We will have to work on a return visit to the area for you. Many thanks, Penny
We just spent a week in Coachmans Cottage which is a perfect cottage in the beautiful village of Steeple Ashton. Penny and Peter are warm and wonderful hosts. The cottage felt like home right away. It is beautifully decorated, extremely comfortable, and wonderfully functional. The local pub, The Longs Arms, is a short stroll from the cottage and was a great place for catching dinner when we were too tired to cook.We found Coachmans Cottage to be a great central point to visit Wells Cathedral, Bath, Glastonbury, and my favorite, Great Chalfield Manor. We highly recommend Coachmans Cottage – thank you Penny for everything!
Owner’s Response: Many thanks for posting this glowing review and I am so pleased that you had such a good time exploring this area. We really will have to get you back again, as you loved Gt. Chalfield Manor then just down the road is Westwood Manor, another gem, and of course the nearby National Trust village of Lacock is an absolute must see. Best, Penny
We spent a fabulous week at Coachmans Cottage during the Easter school holidays. What a find!!
Extremely comfortable and cosy cottage to come back too after a day out sightseeing. The furnishings were all of a high standard and colour co-ordinated. The beds were comfortable and we all slept well. The white goods where all in good working order . Everything had been thought about to make it feel like home and those little things that make a difference like knifes that will cut things and ice ready on arrival !!
Penny had left a welcome tea tray with the most amazing chocolate cake plus a excellent loaf of bread from the Steeple Ashton Village shop. We were able to sit out in the lovely enclosed private courtyard when we arrived and have tea and chocolate cake in the sunshine – heaven. I also have to comment on how clean the cottage was….it was immaculate.
We would recommend looking through all Penny’s information that she has in files about the local area. We visited Stourhead Gardens and House, Longleat Safari Park excellent for kids, village of Lacock which was like a film set, one of the Harry Potter films used Lacock Abbey as a location. We had a pub lunch at The George Inn Lacock which was excellent. Bath with so much to explore, Castle Combe village was beautiful and again used in many films and adverts – last major film was War Horse- well worth a visit.
That just gives a small flavour of the places you can visit from Coachmans Cottage. We were extremely lucky and had no rain all week.
We would not hesitate to recommend this fabulous cottage ( recently awarded 4 stars ) and sure we will return in the future. Thank you Penny and Peter
Response: Thank you so much for your lovely thoughts, and my goodness you managed to pack an awful lot in to one week! The bread from the village shop is really delicious (they make gluten free to order too), and from a local bakery. So, we look forward to welcoming you back to Coachmans Cottage, plenty to see out of season too.
Whilst searching Google Earth for accommodation we came across Coachman’s Cottage. With it taking selected dogs it would normally be something we would keep away from. We were also wary of the glowing reviews as we have been caught before with reviews on owners own websites as they have turned out to be false and placed there by the owners themselves. On this occasion how wrong could we be. Not finding anything else suitable and after speaking to Penny we decided to take a chance and delighted we did so. People like us who do not normally consider pet friendly accommodation should not be put off this property. There was not a single dog hair to be found or even the faintest trace of doggy smell. The cottage was immaculate and had a homely feel as soon as you walked in. Everything you would require was provided and the welcome hamper was really appreciated eliminating the need to go shopping as soon as you arrive. It is ideally situated in a lovely peaceful village for visiting attractions in Wiltshire, Somerset and parts of Gloucestershire and is the perfect place to come back to and relax after a day out. Penny and her Dad were very friendly and helpful without being intrusive. Previous reviewers have not left much to be said without repeating their words therefore we can only say that we fully agree with everything that has been said previously. Due to different tastes and expectations we usually do not recommend things to other people other than saying we liked it but on this occasion we would not hesitate to recommend Coachman’s Cottage to anyone. It would certainly be the top of our list if we were visiting the area again.
Thank you Penny for a great few days break in December 2016.
Response: This will be a helpful review for people with aforementioned misgivings, assuming it is genuine of course! I always question dog owners closely before taking a booking as we work hard at keeping the cottage extremely clean. I agree that reviews could be fabricated by owners, it has always been our policy to post ALL GENUINE reviews, but you will have to take my word for that. To this end we have re-joined “Quality in Tourism”, after an absence of about 5 years, an independent body who inspect the cottage annually, checking that the whole business reaches a set standard, Coachmans Cottage has been awarded 4* with a Gold Award for excellence and achieves 100% for cleanliness.
My first visit to Wiltshire, despite living in the UK for 50 years! Delighted I left it to my friend to organise and book our stay at Coachman’s Cottage (from SA), having picked out all the green countryside that surrounded the town of Steeple Ashton. We have done many road trips in SA and some in the UK, but I can honestly say, this was the most comfortable 5 star accommodation we’ve ever had the good fortune to stay in. Not only were our hosts the most welcoming, but the village soon felt like home too, with visits to the fabulous village store, and pub where we enjoyed several excellent meals. We wanted for nothing; from the beautiful furnishings; well equipped kitchen; welcome hamper and home made brownies and marmalade, to several files of information of stunning places to visit within a short distance of the village. Thanks to Penny, and her Dad, Peter (who calls himself the Maintenance Man!)
My car was left nearby while I went away for a couple of days, and inadvertently I left the passenger window wide-open, which fortunately they noticed while out walking with their dog, and took the situation in hand, going beyond the call of duty, by expertly sealing up the window to keep any rain out, and keeping a close eye on the car, ensuring I had a dry car for my return journey to Kent. Thank you Penny, and Peter. I hope there will be other opportunities to visit your lovely cottage with my friends again in the not too distant future. We had such a happy and comfortable stay, and enjoyed visiting the places you recommended during the day, and returning “home” to our beautiful cottage late afternoon for tea, and later enjoying our evening in front of the super log-fire, discussing the days events.
Response: I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Coachmans and Steeple Ashton. We were only too pleased that our endeavours with your car kept out the rain and wild animals and very many thanks for the super truffles. We look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. Best, Penny.
What a great find!. This was an internet search which did not disappoint. Penny and her father Peter are just the perfect hosts and nothing appears to be too much trouble. The accommodation is just perfection with absolutely nothing overlooked. beautiful lounge, comfortable beds, top quality linen and kitchen equipment and the wood burner with wood and kindling supplied was just the cherry on the top. The cottage occupies a really convenient location for exploring the countryside of Wiltshire and in walking distance of the pub and the super village store which is a veritable Aladdin’s cave of provisions, home bakes and fabulous gifts. I was visiting from South Africa so it might be a while before I can enjoy the comforts of Coachmans Cottage again, but will certainly recommend it to my friends and hope to return sometime in the future. Best wishes to Peter and Penny. Keep up the good work!!
Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to review Coachmans Cottage. It was a pleasure meeting you and your 2 friends, we are very pleased that you were so pleased with the cottage and village. We very much look forward to welcoming you back one day in the future. Best, Penny.
We had a really lovely 9 days at Coachmans Cottage and both agreed it was a fantastic place to stay. Penny had set out a welcome tea tray with homemade brownies and there was also a hospitality hamper on arrival. We were met with a small tour of the house and we felt all our needs were catered for. The house was immaculate and yet it felt a real home from home. Our visits included: The Bath Pump room restaurant to celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary, Wells Cathedral for the one wet day and Stourhead Gardens. The local pub The Longs Arms was a very friendly venue for a good evening meal and we were fed well. Also on several nights in the cottage we lit the wood fire which made it very cosy. We both felt we would struggle to find fault with this accommodation and agreed we had had a perfect getaway. Thank you so much to Penny & Peter.
Another lovely review from more of our 5* guests. Thank you. You picked the nicest time of year (I think!) to visit Stourhead Gardens and this year the autumnal colours are especially spectacular. Sadly you didn’t manage to visit Westonbirt Arboretum, hopefully on your itinerary for your next visit. I am so pleased that Coachmans Cottage proved so successful for your anniversary. We look forward to your return. Best, Penny.
When I found this great accomodation on the internet, I immediately fell in love with it. The pictures of the house, of its luxury interior and of the village convinced me from the very first moment that this was THE place to spend my next holidays. The first contact (by phone) with Penny, the landlady of the cottage, was very pleasant which was already a good start for me! So I booked it right away. And I must say, I do not regret it. To the contrary, reality bested all expectations. I have spent a most wonderful week in Coachmans Cottage and in the very warm and inviting community of Steeple Ashton. Everything, and I really mean everything, was perfect. As written on the website, the cottage is most certainly immaculate, individual, comfortable and furnished to a very high standard. The beds were luxurious and comfortable. I was also very happy to find a well fitted kitchen with all accessories to cater for myself. I expect from a vacation home that I am comfortable and feel at home. I did. Penny and Peter did everything to make me feel at home. When I arrived I found butter, milk, bread, eggs and grounded coffee in the kitchen! They gave me lots of very useful tips for excursions in the area. And we had our chitchat (in a very pleasant way!) every day (I wanted it that way, and I appreciated it too). It was so nice. You must know that Peter and Penny live next door. So, when I needed something or just had questions with regards to the cottage or needed some nice hints for a daytrip, I just rang their bell and we talked. The village: Steeple Ashton is a very small village. There is a lovely little village shop on the main street, run by volunteers from the community. So nice people too. They put aside the daily newspaper and croissants for me every morning. And when I collected those, I had a coffee in the shop (which is served by very friendly people). I was taken up the belltower of the village church and visited the bell ringers. The church warden invited me also up on the roof of the bell tower and showed me the great view from up there over the area. My idea of holiday is connecting with the people of the community. And I must say that the contacts with all the people of Steeple Ashton, including Peter and Penny, was one of my nicest experiences here. The area: You should really go out and make daytrips. The area is wonderful. I can certainly recommend Coachmans Cottage to all those who would like to spend a nice and relaxing holiday.
Oh my goodness, what a glowing review. We enjoyed hearing all about the area that you are from too. I have mentioned before that as we live next door to Coachmans we tread the fine line between giving our guests privacy and being helpful with our local knowledge. Whilst we spoke with you daily thank you for respecting our privacy too. Best, Penny
We first discovered Coachman’s Cottage 3 years ago and after such an idyllic stay in a peaceful location central to everything we wanted to see in the West Country we decided to go back.
They say that you cannot go back without disappointment but we found that Penny and Peter had the cottage even more comfortable. It confirmed our view that you are not just renting a luxury cottage, but joining a friendly, tight knit community.
Penny and Peter were perfect hosts giving us travel tips and a comprehensive list of local pubs to savour the local fare. In short we could not recommend Coachman’s Cottage more highly and will provide details to any Australian friends wanting to see the West Country.
My Response: Thank you so much for this glowing review. It is always a delight to welcome back returning guests and “old friends”, the super people that we meet make this business so worthwhile. We work hard at keeping up the standard of Coachmans Cottage and to this end make constant improvements. Since you left 2 weeks ago we have taken advantage of a gap in bookings to undertake work needed, in addition to smaller additions and decorating, the twin bedroom has new carpet and pictures and the master bedroom now has an upgraded 1500 sprung mattress. Now in the 11th year as a holiday cottage, guests attracted to Coachmans appreciate the personal and caring service that we offer….it is a very fine line between being helpful but not intrusive hosts.
This is our 10th stay in this delightful cottage, & we’ve already booked for next time. Penny & Peter give a warm welcome to an immaculate and comfortable ‘home from home’. Everything is kept to a very high standard and the location is central to lots of beautiful and interesting places.
We are always happy to welcome you back to Coachmans Cottage and your feedback on ongoing improvements are always appreciated. Thank you for posting this review and we will see you next time. Best, Penny.
We’re an ex-Pat English couple with the last 23 years spent in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We visit England annually, usually concentrating on previous hunting grounds in Wiltshire and North Yorkshire. We fly via Dubai, using its useful Durban to Gatwick route. We hire cottages that are large enough to act as a hub for our friends. We vary choices and decided that Coachman’s Cottage in Steeple Ashton looked suitable; Penny’s accessibility and detailed advice beforehand overcame any doubts about centralised booking. And how right this turned out to be for a touring overseas couple. An easily reached but captivating English village, enduring and oozing pride in its summer appearance; an ideally situated ancient cottage, near pub, church, shop and important routes; detailed and sensible comforts in the cottage inventory; immaculately equipped kitchen with all household facilities; instant friendship and guidance from Penny and her father; wonderful peace and calm for sundowners in the garden amid idyllic surroundings. We regard ourselves as reasonably seasoned travellers, never completely out of touch with England and the English but we cannot recall a better spot for a traveller to unwind and begin to absorb the unique charm and rewards of the English rural lifestyle. We congratulate Penny without reservation in running the perfect self-catering cottage. We would love to return and pick up her friendship where we left off.
Oh my goodness. What to say in response to this wonderful review? I am very pleased that you loved Coachmans Cottage and Steeple Ashton so much. We look forward to welcoming you back. Thank you and many thanks. Best, Penny.
We had an excellent time in this lovely cottage. Brownies and home made marmalade upon arrival made us feel welcome. Outside sitting space, excellent pub nearby, lots to see in the neighbourhood. Highly recommended.
Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to review Coachmans Cottage. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay. I hope that we will see you again on your next visit to England. Best, Penny.
Had a wonderful time at Coachmans Cottage. A very comfortable and homely cottage with everything you could need- very well equipped. Set in a beautiful English country village, which is very welcoming. We had a wonderful time exploring nearby attractions including Stonehenge and Bath.
Owner’s Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to review Coachmans Cottage, we are really pleased that you had such a good time exploring the area. We think that Steeple Ashton is a very special and friendly village too. Best, Penny
Coachmans’ cottage was one of the best self- catering cottages I have stayed in. Beautifully furnished, well equipped and very comfortable. A lovely welcome tray included everything we needed for tea and breakfast. A lovely quiet location too.
Owner’s Response: Thank you so much for posting this glowing review. I am delighted that Coachmans Cottage and Steeple Ashton proved such a hit with you. We look forward to meeting you again in the future. Best, Penny.
Really enjoyed our stay in the cottage and felt at home as soon as we arrived, with a lovely welcome pack and home made chocolate cake to greet us on our arrival. The cottage is very cosy, well equipped and comfortable for three to four people. It also benefits from a small courtyard at the front, which acts as a sun trap during the late afternoon / early evening.
The kitchen is very small & narrow, so you need to be well organized if you are cooking an evening meal due to the limited space. However, If you don’t fancy cooking, there are plenty of excellent pubs & restaurants in the local area, all within 15 minutes of the cottage.
Penny the owner was also so helpful during our stay, offering advice if needed on certain locations or just saying hello after walking her two dogs.
I would gladly recommend the cottage and hope to return in the future.
Owner’s Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to post this review and I am very pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Coachmans Cottage and visiting this area which has so much to offer. I am sorry that you found the size of the kitchen challenging, we have equipped it with everything a guest would expect and more, I do stress in adverts that it is a “small separate galley kitchen” and show a photo and floor plan. I am pleased to read that you hope to return in the future and look forward to welcoming you back to Steeple Ashton. Best, Penny.
What a fabulous place to stay! The Village is idyllic and the Cottage is so beautiful!. Well equipped, tastefully furnished and extremely comfortable, it never failed to delight. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners, Penny and Peter. And the welcome pack was a tasty surprise! We came over to Wiltshire from our home in Spain for our Daughter’s Wedding and the Wedding party left from Coachman’s Cottage. What a wonderful place for photographs! And such a tranquil haven for a very hectic week! We will definitely return! Thoroughly recommend it!
Response: Thank you for posting your thoughts. It was fun meeting you and a first for Coachmans Cottage, we have had wedding guests stay in the past but never the bride and family leaving Coachmans for the church…and the sun shone for you all! We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Best, Penny.
Located in a superb location within Wiltshire, this really is a beautiful & well-equipped cottage set in such tranquil surroundings. Oozing quality, it is impeccably clean with lovely décor proving to be a great base to visit picturesque villages and historical sites. The charming owners, Penny & Peter, also provided a fabulous welcome pack which was greatly appreciated. Without doubt, this accommodation is very highly recommended.
Response It was a pleasure meeting you and I’m so pleased that Coachmans Cottage and Steeple Ashton proved such a hit, despite the poor weather! Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts and we look forward to seeing you again one day soon. Best, Penny
We stayed in this most comfortable cottage for a week in mid-April. Pleasant surroundings and helpful owners. The village is well located for many Wiltshire and Somerset attractions and has an excellent general store, a good pub (The Longs Arms). Thank you. We will return.
Response: Thank you and we are looking forward to your return. I am glad that we could be of help and that you enjoyed your stay. Best, Penny
Enjoyed our stay at Coachmans Cottage, in the beautiful village of Steeple Ashton. Would love to go back as Penny and Peter made us very welcome.
There are plenty of national trust places to go and visit and this is a good base to go from. They also supplied a lovely welcome pack full of different goodies, top class. Thank you again.
Response: Thank you for your kind review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and the Breakfast Hamper and we would love to welcome you back again one day soon. Best, Penny.
Coachmans Cottage exceeded our expectations. It is a lovely cottage in a beautiful, quiet village. Owners, Penny and Peter, were very friendly and welcoming and the cottage was decorated and furnished to very high standards. Whilst we did not intend to do much self catering the small kitchen was fully equipped with cooker, washer/dryer, microwave, dishwasher and full range of crockery and cooking utensils. Penny had provided a welcome basket with bread, butter, milk, eggs and marmalade – a very nice touch. With televisions in the living room and main bedroom and Wi-Fi available we couldn’t have asked for anything more. The Longs Arms is only 2 minutes walk away and provided very nice meals. Steeple Ashton is an ideal location for seeing the many sights of Wiltshire and I have no hesitation in recommending Coachmans Cottage.
Response: Thank you for your kind comments and recommendation which I hope will be of help to future potential guests. We hope to tempt you to return to Coachmans Cottage one day. Best, Penny.
Thank you Penny and Peter for allowing us us to stay in your beautiful cottage. The village is charming and so friendly. A perfect break from city life.
Response.. Thank you for your review, certain very different from life in the Capital. We look forward to seeing you again in the Autumn. Best, Penny
This was our second visit to Coachman’s Cottage and our stay lived up to our memory of the last visit. Again we were welcomed by our friendly Hosts Peter & Penny who were most helpful in a pleasant and unobtrusive manner.
The cottage is very well appointed and centrally located in the village of Steeple Ashton. It offers secluded privacy whilst being in the heart of the community. Safe Off Road Car Parking is included.
Geographically, Steeple Aston is convenient for visiting unspoilt ‘historical’ towns located in beautiful countryside: Bath, Bradford on Avon, Marlborough, Frome, & Devizes etc. A Big Thank you to Penny & Peter for a lovely week.
