Our stay in Coachmans Cottage was very good! The house was very beautifull, everything we needed were in the house. Penny and Peter were very friendly and give us a lot of advise. Thank you for that.
We recommend this house to everyone.

Response: Thank you for your kind words, it was a delight to meet you and the family from The Netherlands. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your visit to England and hope that we will see you all again in the future. Best, Penny

Tineke. Netherlands. June 2017Our stay in Coachmans Cottage was very good!

Welcoming hosts who have done an excellent job of creating a very comfortable self-catering cottage. The cottage is cosy, and well equipped. The kitchen is indeed a galley kitchen, but functional for simple meals, but who does elaborate cooking on holiday? There is plenty of storage in the hall and bedrooms with ample hangers. Although there are two bedrooms, four dining room chairs, two sofas etc, I think if four people stayed in the property, you would need to know them extremely well! The courtyard garden is very well tended and a nice spot for relaxing, although the chairs don’t have cushions. The village pub and shop are good and within easy walking distance. Coachman’s Cottage is in a quiet and peaceful location. A good place to stay for a break.

Response: Many thanks for your kind words. On our welcome page of this website we do state “An idyllic retreat for 2 but fully equipped for 4 guests”, Quality in Tourism at VisitBritain assess all of their members properties annually and one of the criteria is the space for the number of guests accommodated, Coachmans achieves 4* with an added Gold Award for excellence, the actual score is comfortably within the 5* range but the size of the kitchen holds it back to 4*, I am sure that you will agree that the 18′ x 12′ sitting room and 12′ x 8′ master bedroom are both of a very generous size for an old cottage. Good point about the lack of outside cushions, I am looking for these now! I know from your email that you intend to return to Coachmans and I look forward to welcoming you in the future and you will benefit from the new garden cushions. Warm regards, Penny

Georgina June 2017Coachman’s cottage

This is the second time I have stayed at Coachman’s Cottage. Penny and Peter are wonderful hosts, very warm and welcoming. The Cottage is gorgeous and extremely comfortable. The village is quintessentially English with a great pub (fab food) and a marvellous community village shop. It is so well placed for so many outings – and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone – I will stay again I’m sure.

Response: I am so pleased that Coachmans Cottage continues to charm you, and that we are maintaining the standard that you expect. Very many thanks for taking the time to post this review and we look forward to welcoming you back again on your next trip to the UK. Best, Penny

Sonya D May 2017Australians on holiday

We received a very warm welcome from Penny as we arrived at this lovely, well presented cottage with its charming and totally private courtyard garden. The basket of goodies, including the delicious chocolate cake, was a welcome surprise. The villagers of Steeple Ashton are very friendly and we were lucky to be there for Open Gardens Day…amazing what is behind some of those garden walls. We had a great week and were able to do plenty of walking and easily visit some of the smaller towns and Bath. If we go back to the same area we will definitely be booking in again.

Response: I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and you were clever to time your visit when Steeple Ashton Gardens were open, a bi-annual event. We will have to work on a return visit to the area for you. Many thanks, Penny

Anne and Julian B June 2017Couldn’t be better

We just spent a week in Coachmans Cottage which is a perfect cottage in the beautiful village of Steeple Ashton. Penny and Peter are warm and wonderful hosts. The cottage felt like home right away. It is beautifully decorated, extremely comfortable, and wonderfully functional. The local pub, The Longs Arms, is a short stroll from the cottage and was a great place for catching dinner when we were too tired to cook.We found Coachmans Cottage to be a great central point to visit Wells Cathedral, Bath, Glastonbury, and my favorite, Great Chalfield Manor. We highly recommend Coachmans Cottage – thank you Penny for everything!
Owner’s Response: Many thanks for posting this glowing review and I am so pleased that you had such a good time exploring this area. We really will have to get you back again, as you loved Gt. Chalfield Manor then just down the road is Westwood Manor, another gem, and of course the nearby National Trust village of Lacock is an absolute must see. Best, Penny

Terrill G. June 2017Perfect and Beautiful

We spent a fabulous week at Coachmans Cottage during the Easter school holidays. What a find!!

Extremely comfortable and cosy cottage to come back too after a day out sightseeing. The furnishings were all of a high standard and colour co-ordinated. The beds were comfortable and we all slept well. The white goods where all in good working order . Everything had been thought about to make it feel like home and those little things that make a difference like knifes that will cut things and ice ready on arrival !!

Penny had left a welcome tea tray with the most amazing chocolate cake plus a excellent loaf of bread from the Steeple Ashton Village shop. We were able to sit out in the lovely enclosed private courtyard when we arrived and have tea and chocolate cake in the sunshine – heaven. I also have to comment on how clean the cottage was….it was immaculate.

We would recommend looking through all Penny’s information that she has in files about the local area. We visited Stourhead Gardens and House, Longleat Safari Park excellent for kids, village of Lacock which was like a film set, one of the Harry Potter films used Lacock Abbey as a location. We had a pub lunch at The George Inn Lacock which was excellent. Bath with so much to explore, Castle Combe village was beautiful and again used in many films and adverts – last major film was War Horse- well worth a visit.

That just gives a small flavour of the places you can visit from Coachmans Cottage. We were extremely lucky and had no rain all week.

We would not hesitate to recommend this fabulous cottage ( recently awarded 4 stars ) and sure we will return in the future. Thank you Penny and Peter

Response: Thank you so much for your lovely thoughts, and my goodness you managed to pack an awful lot in to one week! The bread from the village shop is really delicious (they make gluten free to order too), and from a local bakery. So, we look forward to welcoming you back to Coachmans Cottage, plenty to see out of season too.

Ernie, Julie and Adam. April 2017Fabulous Cottage

Whilst searching Google Earth for accommodation we came across Coachman’s Cottage. With it taking selected dogs it would normally be something we would keep away from. We were also wary of the glowing reviews as we have been caught before with reviews on owners own websites as they have turned out to be false and placed there by the owners themselves. On this occasion how wrong could we be. Not finding anything else suitable and after speaking to Penny we decided to take a chance and delighted we did so. People like us who do not normally consider pet friendly accommodation should not be put off this property. There was not a single dog hair to be found or even the faintest trace of doggy smell. The cottage was immaculate and had a homely feel as soon as you walked in. Everything you would require was provided and the welcome hamper was really appreciated eliminating the need to go shopping as soon as you arrive. It is ideally situated in a lovely peaceful village for visiting attractions in Wiltshire, Somerset and parts of Gloucestershire and is the perfect place to come back to and relax after a day out. Penny and her Dad were very friendly and helpful without being intrusive. Previous reviewers have not left much to be said without repeating their words therefore we can only say that we fully agree with everything that has been said previously. Due to different tastes and expectations we usually do not recommend things to other people other than saying we liked it but on this occasion we would not hesitate to recommend Coachman’s Cottage to anyone. It would certainly be the top of our list if we were visiting the area again.
Thank you Penny for a great few days break in December 2016.

Response: This will be a helpful review for people with aforementioned misgivings, assuming it is genuine of course! I always question dog owners closely before taking a booking as we work hard at keeping the cottage extremely clean. I agree that reviews could be fabricated by owners, it has always been our policy to post ALL GENUINE reviews, but you will have to take my word for that. To this end we have re-joined “Quality in Tourism”, after an absence of about 5 years, an independent body who inspect the cottage annually, checking that the whole business reaches a set standard, Coachmans Cottage has been awarded 4* with a Gold Award for excellence and achieves 100% for cleanliness.

Jeff G. December 2016Home from Home

My first visit to Wiltshire, despite living in the UK for 50 years! Delighted I left it to my friend to organise and book our stay at Coachman’s Cottage (from SA), having picked out all the green countryside that surrounded the town of Steeple Ashton. We have done many road trips in SA and some in the UK, but I can honestly say, this was the most comfortable 5 star accommodation we’ve ever had the good fortune to stay in. Not only were our hosts the most welcoming, but the village soon felt like home too, with visits to the fabulous village store, and pub where we enjoyed several excellent meals. We wanted for nothing; from the beautiful furnishings; well equipped kitchen; welcome hamper and home made brownies and marmalade, to several files of information of stunning places to visit within a short distance of the village. Thanks to Penny, and her Dad, Peter (who calls himself the Maintenance Man!)
My car was left nearby while I went away for a couple of days, and inadvertently I left the passenger window wide-open, which fortunately they noticed while out walking with their dog, and took the situation in hand, going beyond the call of duty, by expertly sealing up the window to keep any rain out, and keeping a close eye on the car, ensuring I had a dry car for my return journey to Kent. Thank you Penny, and Peter. I hope there will be other opportunities to visit your lovely cottage with my friends again in the not too distant future. We had such a happy and comfortable stay, and enjoyed visiting the places you recommended during the day, and returning “home” to our beautiful cottage late afternoon for tea, and later enjoying our evening in front of the super log-fire, discussing the days events.

Response: I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Coachmans and Steeple Ashton. We were only too pleased that our endeavours with your car kept out the rain and wild animals and very many thanks for the super truffles. We look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. Best, Penny.

Heather Y-B, Kent. November 2016Great find for Birthday Celebrations!

What a great find!. This was an internet search which did not disappoint. Penny and her father Peter are just the perfect hosts and nothing appears to be too much trouble. The accommodation is just perfection with absolutely nothing overlooked. beautiful lounge, comfortable beds, top quality linen and kitchen equipment and the wood burner with wood and kindling supplied was just the cherry on the top. The cottage occupies a really convenient location for exploring the countryside of Wiltshire and in walking distance of the pub and the super village store which is a veritable Aladdin’s cave of provisions, home bakes and fabulous gifts. I was visiting from South Africa so it might be a while before I can enjoy the comforts of Coachmans Cottage again, but will certainly recommend it to my friends and hope to return sometime in the future. Best wishes to Peter and Penny. Keep up the good work!!

Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to review Coachmans Cottage. It was a pleasure meeting you and your 2 friends, we are very pleased that you were so pleased with the cottage and village. We very much look forward to welcoming you back one day in the future. Best, Penny.

Brenda F. South Africa. November 2016 Perfection

We had a really lovely 9 days at Coachmans Cottage and both agreed it was a fantastic place to stay. Penny had set out a welcome tea tray with homemade brownies and there was also a hospitality hamper on arrival. We were met with a small tour of the house and we felt all our needs were catered for. The house was immaculate and yet it felt a real home from home. Our visits included: The Bath Pump room restaurant to celebrate our 26th wedding anniversary, Wells Cathedral for the one wet day and Stourhead Gardens. The local pub The Longs Arms was a very friendly venue for a good evening meal and we were fed well. Also on several nights in the cottage we lit the wood fire which made it very cosy. We both felt we would struggle to find fault with this accommodation and agreed we had had a perfect getaway. Thank you so much to Penny & Peter.

My Response

Another lovely review from more of our 5* guests. Thank you. You picked the nicest time of year (I think!) to visit Stourhead Gardens and this year the autumnal colours are especially spectacular. Sadly you didn’t manage to visit Westonbirt Arboretum, hopefully on your itinerary for your next visit. I am so pleased that Coachmans Cottage proved so successful for your anniversary. We look forward to your return. Best, Penny.

Simon K. October 2016A relaxing visit

When I found this great accomodation on the internet, I immediately fell in love with it. The pictures of the house, of its luxury interior and of the village convinced me from the very first moment that this was THE place to spend my next holidays. The first contact (by phone) with Penny, the landlady of the cottage, was very pleasant which was already a good start for me! So I booked it right away. And I must say, I do not regret it. To the contrary, reality bested all expectations. I have spent a most wonderful week in Coachmans Cottage and in the very warm and inviting community of Steeple Ashton. Everything, and I really mean everything, was perfect. As written on the website, the cottage is most certainly immaculate, individual, comfortable and furnished to a very high standard. The beds were luxurious and comfortable. I was also very happy to find a well fitted kitchen with all accessories to cater for myself. I expect from a vacation home that I am comfortable and feel at home. I did. Penny and Peter did everything to make me feel at home. When I arrived I found butter, milk, bread, eggs and grounded coffee in the kitchen! They gave me lots of very useful tips for excursions in the area. And we had our chitchat (in a very pleasant way!) every day (I wanted it that way, and I appreciated it too). It was so nice. You must know that Peter and Penny live next door. So, when I needed something or just had questions with regards to the cottage or needed some nice hints for a daytrip, I just rang their bell and we talked. The village: Steeple Ashton is a very small village. There is a lovely little village shop on the main street, run by volunteers from the community. So nice people too. They put aside the daily newspaper and croissants for me every morning. And when I collected those, I had a coffee in the shop (which is served by very friendly people). I was taken up the belltower of the village church and visited the bell ringers. The church warden invited me also up on the roof of the bell tower and showed me the great view from up there over the area. My idea of holiday is connecting with the people of the community. And I must say that the contacts with all the people of Steeple Ashton, including Peter and Penny, was one of my nicest experiences here. The area: You should really go out and make daytrips. The area is wonderful. I can certainly recommend Coachmans Cottage to all those who would like to spend a nice and relaxing holiday.

My Response

Oh my goodness, what a glowing review. We enjoyed hearing all about the area that you are from too. I have mentioned before that as we live next door to Coachmans we tread the fine line between giving our guests privacy and being helpful with our local knowledge. Whilst we spoke with you daily thank you for respecting our privacy too. Best, Penny

Egon V. September 2016Spent a fantastic holiday in Coachmans Cottage

We first discovered Coachman’s Cottage 3 years ago and after such an idyllic stay in a peaceful location central to everything we wanted to see in the West Country we decided to go back.
They say that you cannot go back without disappointment but we found that Penny and Peter had the cottage even more comfortable. It confirmed our view that you are not just renting a luxury cottage, but joining a friendly, tight knit community.
Penny and Peter were perfect hosts giving us travel tips and a comprehensive list of local pubs to savour the local fare. In short we could not recommend Coachman’s Cottage more highly and will provide details to any Australian friends wanting to see the West Country.

My Response: Thank you so much for this glowing review. It is always a delight to welcome back returning guests and “old friends”, the super people that we meet make this business so worthwhile. We work hard at keeping up the standard of Coachmans Cottage and to this end make constant improvements. Since you left 2 weeks ago we have taken advantage of a gap in bookings to undertake work needed, in addition to smaller additions and decorating, the twin bedroom has new carpet and pictures and the master bedroom now has an upgraded 1500 sprung mattress. Now in the 11th year as a holiday cottage, guests attracted to Coachmans appreciate the personal and caring service that we offer….it is a very fine line between being helpful but not intrusive hosts.

Penny and Barry W. Australia. September 2016Tranquility in Steeple Ashton

This is our 10th stay in this delightful cottage, & we’ve already booked for next time. Penny & Peter give a warm welcome to an immaculate and comfortable ‘home from home’. Everything is kept to a very high standard and the location is central to lots of beautiful and interesting places.

We are always happy to welcome you back to Coachmans Cottage and your feedback on ongoing improvements are always appreciated. Thank you for posting this review and we will see you next time. Best, Penny.

Sue and Tony M August 2016This is our 10th stay

We’re an ex-Pat English couple with the last 23 years spent in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We visit England annually, usually concentrating on previous hunting grounds in Wiltshire and North Yorkshire. We fly via Dubai, using its useful Durban to Gatwick route. We hire cottages that are large enough to act as a hub for our friends. We vary choices and decided that Coachman’s Cottage in Steeple Ashton looked suitable; Penny’s accessibility and detailed advice beforehand overcame any doubts about centralised booking. And how right this turned out to be for a touring overseas couple. An easily reached but captivating English village, enduring and oozing pride in its summer appearance; an ideally situated ancient cottage, near pub, church, shop and important routes; detailed and sensible comforts in the cottage inventory; immaculately equipped kitchen with all household facilities; instant friendship and guidance from Penny and her father; wonderful peace and calm for sundowners in the garden amid idyllic surroundings. We regard ourselves as reasonably seasoned travellers, never completely out of touch with England and the English but we cannot recall a better spot for a traveller to unwind and begin to absorb the unique charm and rewards of the English rural lifestyle. We congratulate Penny without reservation in running the perfect self-catering cottage. We would love to return and pick up her friendship where we left off.
My Response
Oh my goodness. What to say in response to this wonderful review? I am very pleased that you loved Coachmans Cottage and Steeple Ashton so much. We look forward to welcoming you back. Thank you and many thanks. Best, Penny.

James and Jeanie July 2016The perfect start to a memorable holiday

We had an excellent time in this lovely cottage. Brownies and home made marmalade upon arrival made us feel welcome.  Outside sitting space, excellent pub nearby, lots to see in the neighbourhood. Highly recommended.

Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to review Coachmans Cottage. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay. I hope that we will see you again on your next visit to England. Best, Penny.

Sabine V. July 2016Lovely, well-equipped cottage

Had a wonderful time at Coachmans Cottage. A very comfortable and homely cottage with everything you could need- very well equipped. Set in a beautiful English country village, which is very welcoming. We had a wonderful time exploring nearby attractions including Stonehenge and Bath.
Owner’s Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to review Coachmans Cottage, we are really pleased that you had such a good time exploring the area. We think that Steeple Ashton is a very special and friendly village too. Best, Penny

Rebecca S July 2016Beautiful homely cottage in a welcoming village

Coachmans’ cottage was one of the best self- catering cottages I have stayed in. Beautifully furnished, well equipped and very comfortable. A lovely welcome tray included everything we needed for tea and breakfast. A lovely quiet location too.
Owner’s Response: Thank you so much for posting this glowing review. I am delighted that Coachmans Cottage and Steeple Ashton proved such a hit with you. We look forward to meeting you again in the future. Best, Penny.

Annette H July 2016Delightful cottage with a warm welcome.

Really enjoyed our stay in the cottage and felt at home as soon as we arrived, with a lovely welcome pack and home made chocolate cake to greet us on our arrival. The cottage is very cosy, well equipped and comfortable for three to four people. It also benefits from a small courtyard at the front, which acts as a sun trap during the late afternoon / early evening.

The kitchen is very small & narrow, so you need to be well organized if you are cooking an evening meal due to the limited space. However, If you don’t fancy cooking, there are plenty of excellent pubs & restaurants in the local area, all within 15 minutes of the cottage.

Penny the owner was also so helpful during our stay, offering advice if needed on certain locations or just saying hello after walking her two dogs.

I would gladly recommend the cottage and hope to return in the future.

Owner’s Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to post this review and I am very pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Coachmans Cottage and visiting this area which has so much to offer. I am sorry that you found the size of the kitchen challenging, we have equipped it with everything a guest would expect and more, I do stress in adverts that it is a “small separate galley kitchen” and show a photo and floor plan. I am pleased to read that you hope to return in the future and look forward to welcoming you back to Steeple Ashton. Best, Penny.

G K J July 2016Totally relaxing cottage in a quiet location

What a fabulous place to stay! The Village is idyllic and the Cottage is so beautiful!. Well equipped, tastefully furnished and extremely comfortable, it never failed to delight. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners, Penny and Peter. And the welcome pack was a tasty surprise! We came over to Wiltshire from our home in Spain for our Daughter’s Wedding and the Wedding party left from Coachman’s Cottage. What a wonderful place for photographs! And such a tranquil haven for a very hectic week! We will definitely return! Thoroughly recommend it!

Response: Thank you for posting your thoughts. It was fun meeting you and a first for Coachmans Cottage, we have had wedding guests stay in the past but never the bride and family leaving Coachmans for the church…and the sun shone for you all! We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Best, Penny.

Mandy and Don May 2016A Tranquil Haven

Located in a superb location within Wiltshire, this really is a beautiful & well-equipped cottage set in such tranquil surroundings. Oozing quality, it is impeccably clean with lovely décor proving to be a great base to visit picturesque villages and historical sites. The charming owners, Penny & Peter, also provided a fabulous welcome pack which was greatly appreciated. Without doubt, this accommodation is very highly recommended.

Response  It was a pleasure meeting you and I’m so pleased that Coachmans Cottage and Steeple Ashton proved such a hit, despite the poor weather! Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts and we look forward to seeing you again one day soon. Best, Penny

Steve, Audrey & Josh June 2016A Special Place

We stayed in this most comfortable cottage for a week in mid-April. Pleasant surroundings and helpful owners. The village is well located for many Wiltshire and Somerset attractions and has an excellent general store, a good pub (The Longs Arms). Thank you. We will return.
Response: Thank you and we are looking forward to your return. I am glad that we could be of help and that you enjoyed your stay. Best, Penny

Geoff and Margaret H April 2016A Comfortable Bolthole

Enjoyed our stay at Coachmans Cottage, in the beautiful village of Steeple Ashton. Would love to go back as Penny and Peter made us very welcome.
There are plenty of national trust places to go and visit and this is a good base to go from. They also supplied a lovely welcome pack full of different goodies, top class. Thank you again.

Response:  Thank you for your kind review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and the Breakfast Hamper and we would love to welcome you back again one day soon. Best, Penny.

mike and rosemary May 2016our stay at Coachmans Cottage

Coachmans Cottage exceeded our expectations. It is a lovely cottage in a beautiful, quiet village. Owners, Penny and Peter, were very friendly and welcoming and the cottage was decorated and furnished to very high standards. Whilst we did not intend to do much self catering the small kitchen was fully equipped with cooker, washer/dryer, microwave, dishwasher and full range of crockery and cooking utensils. Penny had provided a welcome basket with bread, butter, milk, eggs and marmalade – a very nice touch. With televisions in the living room and main bedroom and Wi-Fi available we couldn’t have asked for anything more. The Longs Arms is only 2 minutes walk away and provided very nice meals. Steeple Ashton is an ideal location for seeing the many sights of Wiltshire and I have no hesitation in recommending Coachmans Cottage.

Response:  Thank you for your kind comments and recommendation which I hope will be of help to future potential guests. We hope to tempt you to return to Coachmans Cottage one day. Best, Penny.

Allan Milne May 2016Exceeded our expectations

A and S Scott, March 2016 Lovely Cottage Great Village

This was our second visit to Coachman’s Cottage and our stay lived up to our memory of the last visit. Again we were welcomed by our friendly Hosts Peter & Penny who were most helpful in a pleasant and unobtrusive manner.
The cottage is very well appointed and centrally located in the village of Steeple Ashton. It offers secluded privacy whilst being in the heart of the community. Safe Off Road Car Parking is included.

Geographically, Steeple Aston is convenient for visiting unspoilt ‘historical’ towns located in beautiful countryside: Bath, Bradford on Avon, Marlborough, Frome, & Devizes etc. A Big Thank you to Penny & Peter for a lovely week.

Sylvia FoleyA Little Piece Of Heaven

We have recently returned from a few days staying at Coachman’s. What a little gem- it has absolutely everything you need and more. It is very tastefully furnished and warm and cosy on grey November days. The local pub is only a short distance away and we were made to feel welcome there and enjoyed the excellent food. Also Meg, our springer spaniel, was spoilt by treats on arrival at Coachman’s and at the pub. Penny and Peter are very friendly and were lovely to chat to and gave helpful advice on places to visit . A lovely welcome pack with home made marmalade and wonderful chocolate cake greeted us on our arrival. If this little gem is so wonderful in November it must be even better at other times of year.

Owner’s Response.. Thank you very much for your lovely comments

Jo BridgeA Little Gem

What can I say about Coachman’s Cottage. It is everything and more than the website illustrates. Maizey (My Golden Retriever) was offered a warm welcome by Penny and family. The cottage was immaculate, yet held that cozy cottage charm which I so love. The cottage is set in the idyllic village of Steeple Ashton. So lovely to walk through. Every turn you make is a period cottage or building depicting the true English Heritage of the area. We were blessed with some lovely weather. The little well tended garden at the front was very secluded and a sun trap for the morning sunshine we were blessed with. Ideal for our morning breakfast.

Not only is the cottage dog friendly, but there are many dog walks to share in the area. We visited the White Horse at Westbury. It was breathtaking, so much space for Maizey to run freely. You could see for miles. So many more planned for our next visit. Also there are plenty of dog friendly pubs in the area where dogs are welcomed into the bars. So if you are looking for somewhere to stay for a holiday and you want to bring your dog, I can highly recommend Coachman’s cottage. If I could have given this cottage 10 stars I would have done. Looking at our diaries now to plan our next visit.

Pauline LaneDog Friendly Haven

Fabulous cottage in a lovely location. Will definitely return.

SpikeUnbeatable

Coachman’s Cottage was superb, exactly what we were after. So comfortable and everything immaculate and present to a very high standard. Hosts were extremely friendly and welcoming and the chocolate cake on arrival was to die for. Steeple Ashton as a destination is perfect, the pub and local village shop were both excellent. It is allows easy access to all sorts of amazing places to visit, including Bath, Avebury, Devizes, Salisbury and even London by train. Would highly recommend and will definitely stay again when we are in the area.

Response: Thank you so much for your very kind review, we are so pleased that Coachmans Cottage delivered all for you. As well as the places you mention there are a wealth of small and lesser known places of interest to visit in the area including Great Chalfield and Westwood Manor Houses and the delightful gardens at Iford Manor to name but a few. We very much look forward to welcoming you back one day in the future and will be most happy to point you in the direction of more of these locations. Best, Penny

Sonya DCoachman’s Cottage was superb

What a little treasure! An absolutely delightful cottage and immaculate in every way A beautiful country cottage in a beautiful English country village. Our hosts were warm and welcoming and the cottage was supplied with all the necessary to get us off to a great start. We were there for two weeks and it was an ideal base to explore the South West from Dorset up to the Cotswolds.
Warm, inviting and a wonderful start to our holiday, Coachman’s Cottage set the scene for us.
Thank you s much Penny and Peter for the privilege of allowing us to stay at your wonderful cottage.
If we ever have the opportunity to get back to Wiltshire this will be the place.

Response: Very many thanks for leaving such a fabulous review. The village is an ideal base for visiting a large area and a 2 week stay does give guests time to explore further afield if they wish. We do hope to tempt you back to our all so “Engish country cottage and village”. Best, Penny

Paul and Lesley, Perth, AustraliaWhat a little treasure !

Coachmans in Steeple Ashton is a cozy cottage that was always fun to return to at the end of a busy day of sightseeing. The location is great for visiting numerous gardens and National Trust properties, and Penny and Peter are very considerate hosts. If in the area again, we would love to return!
Owner’s Response: Thank you for the lovely review of COACHMANS COTTAGE. We are so glad the cottage, Steeple Ashton and Wiltshire delivered for you and hope that we can tempt you to return one day in the future. Best, Penny.

Vicki, USA Coachmans in Steeple Ashton is a cozy cottage

Steeple Ashton and the Coachman’s Cottage are both very lovely. My husband, myself, and our 2 teenage children were very comfortable. Although very quiet and small; (which we were looking for) the village did have an excellent pub to eat at and a shop to pick up everyday items as well as freshly baked goods. There are several walking trails from here. You are in the Cotswolds so everything is a walk or drive away. We also visited Stonehenge and Avebury. Was more impressed with Avebury that Stonehenge but enjoyed both. We also visited LaCock a small town that Penny recommended and enjoyed out time there walking the village and visiting the Abby and church. The trees were starting to blossom and daffodils were in bloom this made the villages picture perfect.

Kathy A.Steeple Ashton & Coachman’s Cottage both very lovely

After visiting the city of London numerous times between 1972 and 2003 and then seemingly forgetting all about England for a complete decade, we were suddenly reminded of the fact that there is still a whole wonderful country left to explore, and so we looked for the best place to stay in southwest England. I think we found it! Coachmans Cottage is an ideal place to call temporary home if you want to experience the very real and enchanting English countryside, to see many of the places you might have heard of or seen on TV in an Agatha Christie mystery. Trust those pictures, Coachmans Cottage is really a dream come true that will make you feel so at home you’ll wish you could stay for good. And you get your own private parking space, too! Penny and Peter are the kindest and most helpful hosts you can imagine. That Award is more than deserved. Steeple Ashton is a charming village about which a complete book has been written (available for reading in the cottage), and the local pub serves excellent food. And if you don’t feel like eating out, you can cook up anything you want in the beautiful and well-equipped kitchen. I could go on for hours about all the lovely places we visited during our stay, but you oughta experience it yourselves! Highly recommended, naturally! Hope we can come back soon…

Lutz And Ursula, GermanyThe best place to stay in southwest England.

Our family had a wonderful stay at the Coachman’s Cottage this past April. We are a family of four with 2 teenage sons. They were comfortable in their own bedroom, and we all easily shared the well equipped bathroom. The kitchen was cozy but had everything we needed, and we enjoyed breakfast and snacks in the cottage many times. The area is absolutely stunning countryside and easy to navigate by car. The pub is quaint and offers food that is not only standard pub fare-we thoroughly enjoyed our meals there. Penny was extremely accommodating-always ready to answer our questions, offer advice or give directions. She even organized a trip to the church to watch the bell ringing in the steeple-it was truly an amazing experience and a nice opportunity to meet the local villagers. When I hear church bells now it has a more meaningful sound to me and brings back good memories of our wonderful time there. It was very easy to take the train to Bath for the day and enjoy the lovely sights there. The other small trips we took were easily traveled by car. Our weather was perfect and we wished our stay had been longer. We have traveled extensively and lived in 6 different countries but our time spent in Steeple Ashton at Coachman’s Cottage will always be remembered as a special experience. I highly suggest a visit.
Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review for “Coachmans”. I especially enjoyed your description of our SMALL kitchen as “cosy”!. It is the guests that makes owning a holiday cottage such fun and it was a pleasure meeting you all and I do hope that we will be welcoming you back to Steeple Ashton one day soon. Best Penny

P.H., Aug 2015A wonderful stay at Coachman’s Cottage

…… Coachman’s Cottage is great!
We spent the week at the cottage with our friends Bridget & Gerald, touring the area bell ringing in Wiltshire. As a group of some 25 ringers from Hexham we have an annual week ringing at Churches in different parts of the UK, this year in Wiltshire, so are quite experienced in sourcing accommodation.
Against this background, we can say that Coachman’s Cottage and Steeple Ashton (pub, shop, villagers, etc) compare very highly against accommodation we have used in previous years.
Many thanks Penny for the use of your lovely cottage and the local advice which we found invaluable.

Andy & Gill Hayden Ring Out The News .......July 2015

We have just returned from spending a wonderful week at Coachmans Cottage. The cottage itself was spotlessly clean and very comfortable, probably the best cottage that we have stayed in.
Set in a picturesque village with pub, shop and village green,it was like a village on T.V’s Midsomer Murders (without the body count)
Very friendly staff in the local pub and shop both a must to visit for food and drink etc.
The Wiltshire countryside is stunningly beautiful and is surely overlooked by most tourists heading south….a perfect place to have a holiday as there is very little local traffic to deal with!
Thanks to Penny and Peter for their helpful suggestions on where to visit… a very memorable stay.

Pete & Mary Anderson, July 2015Wonderful Stay

We really enjoyed our stay at Coachman’s Cottage. Its is tastefully furnished with everything you need to make your stay very comfortable. The courtyard garden is very pretty to sit in and jenjoy a glass of wine or two and soak up the atmosphere of what is a very pretty village. Penny,s hospitality is first class, she provides lots of information to make your stay enjoyable. The cottage is perfectly situated to be able to visit lots of interesting places without too much travelling. The local pub is welcoming and serves decent food and the village shop is well stocked. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would have no hesitation in recommending this beautiful cottage in this pretty village. I hope that we can return one day – soon.

Sue and Mike Boyes, June 2015Wonderful Week Away

Lovely, relaxing, clean cottage. We stayed nine nights (would have stayed more if it wasn’t already booked!) during a move to a near by home. What a treat to return to Coachmans after a day of working on our house. Comfortable, clean, and nice hot shower! Located in a lovely village with a general store and pub. Truly has everything you need. Thank you Penny and Peter! We will see you around the village!

Lisa Campbell, Florida, USA, June 2015An Oasis During Chaos

We have just returned from three nights at Coachmans Cottage (not long enough). Lovely clean, comfortable cottage, in very pretty village, close to many attractions and lots of helpful tourist information from Penny. Thank you also for ‘welcome’ chocolate cake.

Response.. Thank you for your kind review, we are very pleased that you enjoyed your short stay…I hope that we can tempt you back for longer next time, this area does have a lot to offer visitors. Penny

Jeff & Elise King, March 2015Relaxing Break

We very much enjoyed our 3 day stay (in early December ’14) at the cottage. It is charming, cosy and very comfortable as well as perfectly located for day excursions. We visited Bath, Devizes, Avebury and Lacock Abbey – finding the countryside beautiful and the towns intriguing and picturesque. We were always happy to return to the cottage after a stop at the village store for provisions and conversation. Penny’s helpful suggestions and pleasant hospitality made our stay very enjoyable. 2 US schoolmates on a UK trip, so much fun!

Response..Thank you so much for the lovely review. You packed so much into 3 days and in December when daylight hours are on the short side too. I am really glad that you enjoyed your stay in Coachmans Cottage, Steeple Ashton and hope that we can tempt you back one day in the future. Best, Penny

Lucy Clark, USA, Jan 2015Charming Cottage,

Our stay in September ’14 was wonderful. We have stayed in cottages all over the UK but this must rate as Number 1! It is beautifully and sympathetically furnished with every possible thought for comfort and relaxation. The kitchen is perhaps a tad on the small side but is well kitted out so we wanted for nothing.
The village is typically English with a great pub and friendly shop and the whole area is full of amazing places to visit – Cean locks near Devise are a must, Avebury is much quieter than Stonehenge and the actual village is delightful. There are too many National Trust properties within driving distance to mention in this space but suffice to say, we visited a different one most days even managing two on a couple of days! A walk round the village is definitely recommended, there are lots of hidden corners and beautiful cottages and the huge church is well worth closer inspection. I really hope we will be able to return to this lovely cottage sometime so a belated thank you Penny, Peter and Jo for a wonderful week and also, thank you for the lovely Christmas card of the church in the snow. Robert and Jo Barnes.

Response..Thank you so much for your kind review, better late than never…we thought we had lost this one. We do stress that the kitchen is small but with very careful planning it has pretty much everything except a freezer. We really look forward to seeing you again sometime. Best, Penny

Robert and Joanne Barnes, Jan 2015 A VERY Belated Review of a Wonderful Cottage,

We are delighted to recommend Coachmans Cottage as a thoroughly excellent English country-cottage stay. The cottage is superb and Penny has decorated it beautifully. Your stay is sure to be quiet, relaxing and luxurious.
Steeple Ashton is a lovely village with a great village shop and pub. It is well located for exploring Wiltshire and the West Country. We easily traveled to Westonbirt Arboretum to the north, south to Glastonbury and Salisbury, west through the Cheddar Gorge to the coast at Weston Super Mare and east to outlet shopping in Swindon. Our touring was made even more pleasant, knowing that we would return to our lovely cottage at the end of each busy day to rest and recuperate.
Despite being a long way from Brisbane to Steeple Ashton, we hope to return sometime.
Thanks Penny and Peter

Response..What a pleasure to meet you both and I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Coachmans. As you say a bit too far for an inpromptu stay but we very much look forward to welcoming you back one day in the future. Best, Penny

Warren and Noela Batts (Australia) Nov 2014 Quintessential English Cottage Experience,

When we arrived at Coachmans Cottage we found that, if anything, the reality exceeded the descriptions and comments on the website. Tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean, and warm as toast for a winter break. A warm welcome from Penny and Peter, and all in a delightful quintessential English village.
We have already recommended to family and friends and are looking forward to returning next year.

Response..Thank you so much for your kind review, all that you describe is exactly what we aim to provide at Coachmans. We are so happy that you feel able to recommend the cottage and we very much look forward to your visit next year. Best, Penny.

Ray Bone Nov 2014 Reality exceeded the description

5 out of 5
After visiting the city of London numerous times between 1972 and 2003 and then seemingly forgetting all about England for a complete decade, we were suddenly reminded of the fact that there is still a whole wonderful country left to explore, and so we looked for the best place to stay in southwest England.

Lutz and Ursula Koch, Germany, Oct 2014A DREAM HOME IN THE COUNTRYSIDE

We spent the week of September 12th at the lovely Coachman’s Cottage and were pampered by our hosts, Penny and Peter. The Cottage is immaculate and everything you could want for your stay is provided.
We enjoyed Steeple Ashton for its wonderful buildings, history and peaceful surrounds. We joined both the National Trust and English Heritage as we still had a further 4 weeks of our 5 week vacation left which allows us to see the many historical sites in the area.
It was always nice to return to the sanctuary of our cottage at the end of a busy day of sightseeing for a relaxing evening even if it is a lightning and thunder storm as one of our nights was.
We can’t over recommend the Coachman’s Cottage and Steeple Ashton as a place to stay.
We shall return. Thanks for everything Penny and Peter.
Response..Thank you so much for taking the time to post this kind review, it was a pleasure meeting you both and we are delighted that Coachmans was such a success for you and that you enjoyed the rest of your holiday. We very much look forward to the day you return. Best, Penny and Peter

Doug and Margaret Plumsteel Vancouver, Oct 2014Couldn’t Have Been Better !

We spent two wonderful weeks in Coachman’s Cottage, enjoying Steeple Ashton itself and many nearby attractions (historic villages, manor houses, old pubs, archaeological sites). Penny and Peter are charming, helpful, and unobtrusive hosts, and the cottage is truly glorious. It’s finished to a very high standard, beautifully decorated, comfortable, clean, and absolutely quiet. It’s an ancient place (by US standards) with every modern convenience. Many days we were tempted not to visit the many nearby sites but instead just to relax in this idyllic cottage.
Steeple Ashton has many buildings from the 1500s and 1600s and represents a quality of peaceful village life fast disappearing. The local pub is lovely and comfortable and serves excellent food. The local church (ca 1450) has “cathedral” qualities and a fine antiquarian book collection in its tower room. The community-run Village Store is a very friendly place and stocks many of the food and other items you may need. Have a cup of tea and a fresh-baked croissant there in the morning and read a newspaper. The “staff” are the residents of Steeple Ashton, and all of them offer a very friendly welcome. They are happy to chat with you or to leave you alone if you prefer.
Steeple Ashton and Coachman’s Cottage should be on the radar for American visitors who want to experience the incredible charms of English village life and be strategically located for nearby visits to many of England’s most picturesque villages and historic places (note that Bath and Highclere Castle/Downton Abbey are just around the corner).
We will always have a big place in our hearts for Steeple Ashton, Coachman’s, and Penny and Peter. An enchanting sojourn in every respect.

Response..Unusual for me but I am at a loss for words…such a charming and glowing review. THANK YOU. We very much hope to tempt you back to Coachmans again one day. Thinking about it perhaps I could enroll you as my marketing team. Best Penny

Jon and Kitty, Santa Barbara USA Sept 2014 Idyllic !!

We had a wonderful time in this cottage. The house is lovely and very comfortable, and the village is really beautiful with and excellent pub and a charming village store. Very centrally located for visiting Bath and Stonehenge. We also enjoyed cycling along the Kenneth and Avon canal (cycle hire in Bradford) and visiting the locks in Devizes. We made some pleasant walks through the Wiltshire countryside, and our daughters went horseriding (and enjoyed this very much). Thank you Penny (and Peter) for the very warm welcome. You were always there to give us advice, and we really enjoyed the occasional chat!
Many thanks from Cor and Petra, Anne and Tessa.

Response..Thank you for your kind review. I am glad that the horse riding proved a success, we will put details of the treking centre in the cottage for future guests. The cycle hire a Bradford on Avon is very popular. We hope to welcome you back to Coachmans on day soon. Best, Penny

Petra De Ruiter, Rotterdam, Sept 2014Lovely Cottage

We had a fantastic week in your lovely, cosy, clean and comfortable cottage with our 2 daughters. The village is so nice and it’s very comfortable to have the local village store and pub at walking distance. We loved the pub! And we did some nice morning walks. Ideal is to have nice things around to go: Bath (the most beautiful of all), but also loved Bradford on avon, Lacock abbey and the girls of course Longleat stately home (safari). Thank you so much for your kindness and hospitality. We have really enjoyed it and will have a life long memory.

Response…and lovely to hear from you again. It was a real delight meeting you and I am so pleased that your visit to Coachmans and the Steeple Ashton area was such a hit with you all. Many thanks for writing this kind review and we look forward to meeting you again in the future. Best, Penny

Chantal Nauta, Netherlands, Aug 2014Lovely Cottage

Thank you for the hospitality as we have experienced during our stay in the cottage. The cottage provided all we needed. It combined luxury with authentic. We enjoyed the stillness and the privacy of the cottage. We also enjoyed the local pub and village job. The kind talks we had with the people of the village gave as a feeling of welcome.
The area is full of walks and we even managed to cycle in the area. Around the village we enjoyed a lot of sights and monuments.
Maybe one day we return to your cottage. I am pretty sure of that.
Warm greetings from Jan, Connie and Ineke from Holland

Response..Thank you so much for posting such a lovely and very personalised review. I am delighted to hear that you will return in the future and we look forward to that day. Best wishes, Penny.

Jan Kuitwaard, Holland, July 2014 Something Special !!

A lovely welcoming cottage in an attractive village. We very much enjoyed our week; there are plenty of things to do and see. The village pub is friendly and serves good food. There is a very helpful village shop as well. Many thanks for the helpful advice on places to visit and for all the attention to detail and thoughtful extras in the cottage. We very much hope to come again.

Response..Many thanks for this review, especially as you were unsure as to the security of posting something on the internet, only you and I know who you are. Glad that you enjoyed all that Steeple Ashton and the area has to offer and I very much look forward to seeing you both again in the future. Best, Penny

A.& J. Horne, July 2014An Ideal Cottage,

This is a lovely cottage, in fact we think the best we have ever stayed in. Penny & Peter are delightful and very helpful. We do hope to come back one day as it is very central to visit the local places of interest, Steeple Ashton is very picturesque, the Pub is very near and serves excellent meals

Response..I am delighted that Coachmans Cottage and Steeple Ashton delivered so well for you, as you say the friendly local pub is only a short walk and does serve good food. We very much look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. Best, Penny

Val & Alan Robbins, July 2014Definitely Best Ever,

Where to start: to quote a phrase we heard repeatedly, everything was lovely. Steeple Ashton was beautiful in April, a wonderful mixture of architectures and breathtaking flower gardens. So picturesque it is a wonder some mini-series has not been filmed there. The food and service at the local pub were superb.
But best of all was our cozy cottage and the warm hospitality of our hostess including welcoming tea and chocolate cake. She was there when we needed her, but still gave us space to feel comfortably at home. The house was supplied with a complete set of manuals for the appliances, suggestions for local sights, and maps of possible hikes. The cottage itself was immaculate and extremely comfortable; sometimes it was hard to get out the door to go sightseeing. It served as a rendezvous for us from the US and our daughter and son-in-law from Switzerland for a week. Spacious enough for all four.
Thank you, Penny (and your kind father).

Response..Thank you so much for posting such a glowing review and in return it was a great pleasure to welcome you all to Coachmans…BUT…shhh… we residents do not want our beautiful and undoubtedly special village over-run by film crew,.In the early ’90s it was used in the TV series The House of Eliott. I hope that we may act as a rendezvous location again. Best Penny

Mark & Marilyn Clark, June 2014All We Had Hoped For,

The cottage is situated in an idyllic village location with the local pub and village shop within a short walking distance. The cottage itself is furnished to an extremely high standard and was presented in pristine condition. We would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who enjoys high standards in a quiet village location but with easy access to all that the area has to offer.

Response..I am really pleased that you were so happy with Coachmans and the location and really look forward to seeing you again soon. Best, Penny

Bob and Ann Jamieson, June 2014An idyllic village location,

Beautiful well appointed cottage, welcoming hosts. Everything catered for. Stunning village and countryside. An ideal base for sightseeing the region. Thoroughly enjoyed our week.

Response..Thank you for taking the time out of your UK visit to post this lovely review. Hope you are still enjoying our beautiful country and if ever you do another long haul we would love to see you all again one day. Best, Penny

Lyn Tutt, June 2014Beautiful Cottage

We enjoyed our week in Coachmans Cottage in May 2014.
The cottage is charming and is spotlessly clean and well appointed. We hope to return in the future.
Thank you Penny for your warm welcome.

Response..I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay in Coachmans, the village and the area. It was a great pleasure meeting you all and we look forward to seeing you on your next visit to the UK. Best, Penny

Tony Jones, June 2014Charming and spotlessly clean,

Our family had a wonderful stay at the Coachman’s Cottage this past April. We are a family of four with 2 teenage sons. The kitchen was cozy but had everything we needed, and we enjoyed breakfast and snacks in the cottage many times. The area is absolutely stunning countryside and easy to navigate by car. She even organized a trip to the church to watch the bell ringing in the steeple-it was truly an amazing experience and a nice opportunity to meet the local villagers. When I hear church bells now it has a more meaningful sound to me and brings back good memories of our wonderful time there. Response..Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review for Coachmans. I especially enjoyed your description of our SMALL kitchen as cosy. It is the guests that makes owning a holiday cottage such fun and it was a pleasure meeting you all and I do hope that we will be welcoming you back to Steeple Ashton one day soon. Penny

Fogel, June 2014A wonderful stay,

We had a lovely week at Coachmans Cottage in April. It is an easy drive from Heathrow and a great place to recover from 8 hours jet lag after flying from western Canada! The cottage is peaceful, a short stroll from the shop and the pub, has nice walks from the door, and is perfectly located for visits to the many nearby gardens, cathedrals, and delightful villages. The cottage is very comfortable, clean, and well-equipped. Penny, the owner,is very helpful, and we were grateful for the delicious welcome tea. We’re looking forward to another stay on our next visit to the UK!

Response..It was a great pleasure meeting you both and so pleased that all was well received, including the tea tray. We look forward to welcoming you back at a future date. Best, Penny

Ian And Annabelle Dawson, Canada, May 2014 A lovely week at Coachmans,

After a long drive on a grey and dismal February weekend, it was lovely to arrive at Coachman’s Cottage, which was warm and cosy, beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean and with all the essentials one needs when self catering – even some chocolate cake to keep us going. The village itself is perfectly placed for exploring the area – the scenic countryside, pretty villages, not forgetting Bath and Salisbury. There’s a friendly village shop nearby for essentials, but the larger supermarkets are only a short drive away in the nearby towns. And the pub is conveniently within walking distance! It was a pleasure to stay for a week and thanks to the owner, Penny, for her hospitality.

Response..I am so pleased that you enjoyed you enjoyed your stay with us. Hopefully you will find your dream home in this locality this year, meanwhile I would love to welcome you back to Coachmans again. Best, Penny

Alan and Cathy, March 2014Warm and cosy

We’ve stayed in many cottages over the years, many of which were very good but this is now a favourite. The cottage is comfortable, airy and welcoming. Although the front room is of a very good size for a cottage, it still had a cosy feel to it. The kitchen is quite small but believe me, everything you would need for a self catering holiday is there. Every room was decorated to a high standard and little touches around the place like tissues in the main bedroom and hand cream in the bathroom showed that Penny and Peter try to make their guests feel as welcome as possible. The log fire was probably my favourite thing although the central heating was more than adequate. The village itself is beautiful but despite staying for a week, we just didn’t find the time to have a good walk round – something we hope to rectify in the future. This is a perfect base for such attractions as Bath, Cheddar Gorge, Bristol to name but a few. Oh and yes! we agree with other reviews, the chocolate cake which awaited us on our arrival was delicious.Thank you both for a great stay.

Response..Oh thank you so much for such a glowing review. Arriving in the midst of what has been the wettest winter on record you were so lucky with the weather which always helps a holiday along. We are really pleased that you have felt comfortable in Coachmans whether rain or shine. I look forward to welcoming you both back in the future. Best Penny.

Jo And Graham Pennells, March 2014Looking For Comfort And Relaxation ?

Thank you Penny and Peter for the warm welcome (and delicious chocolate cake) to your beautiful cottage. Coachmans Cottage is a joy to stay in , everything is there for one’s comfort . The beds are very comfy and the cottage is in a very peaceful setting. After a three night stay we felt completely refreshed. Many thanks , we hope we may have the privilege of a return visit sometime.

Response..Many thanks for taking the time to send this very kind review and we are so pleased that Coachmans continues to please. It was very pleasant chatting with you both again, and hearing all about the recent marriage of your youngest daughter. We very much look forward to welcoming you to Coachmans again soon. Best. Penny

Ann and Peter Gardner, Feb 2014A Peaceful Retreat,

Despite the rain we recently enjoyed a lovely, relaxing weekend at the Coachman’s Cottage. Set in an idyllic location, the cottage has lots of character and everything you need has been thought of by Penny. We hope to visit again later this year. Thank you

Response..Thanks for taking the time to post this review, it was really nice meeting you and I am glad the cottage lived up to expectations. Look forward to seeing you again soon. Best, Penny.

Keith, Jan 2014 " relaxing weekend "

Me an my partner had a brief but lovely stay over new year. The cottage is very sweet, well equiped and a with a very cosy fire. We also a really good lunch at the long arms New Year’s Day. Was perfect escape from the city.

Response..2 nights is all to short to see much locally but I am very pleased that you enjoyed your short escape to this lovely village and had a good lunch at the local. 2014 came in like a lion so battening down in front of the fire was a very good choice. Best wishes Penny

Robyn, Jan 2014New Year,

Hiring a classic car and staying at the Cottage was a perfect way to explore this lovely part of the West Country. The Cottage was lovely for a birthday weekend away with the village (especially the shop/café) being welcoming and a relaxing escape from the pressures of everyday life. The Cottage was full of character and provided everything we needed and more. Claire chuckled a lot every time Ben banged his head on the beams (there were numerous chuckles!). Thank you Penny for being the perfect host and for the little touches that made the difference.

Response..Lovely to meet you both, yes Ben is very tall and some doorways do have to be ducked under by one so lofty. We look forward to meeting you both again in the future. Best wishes for the New Year. Penny.

Claire and Ben, Dec 2013Birthday Memories,

Just back home after a 4 night break at Coachmans cottage and wish that we could have stayed longer. Our expectations were high after reading the other reviews on the web-site and we were not disappointed with any aspect. The cottage was warm, cosy, spotlessly clean and equipped with everything that we needed. It is clear that a lot of thought has gone into providing everything that you would expect, and a few things that you wouldn’t. The location is ideal as a base for visiting the many sights that the area has to offer. Bath was our favourite but we also enjoyed our time spent in Bristol and Bradford on Avon. Penny gave us a warm welcome, offered some useful advice based on her local knowledge and was available to provide any other information, if required. The Old Bear at Staverton was our favourite dining experience. We are already discussing our next visit.

Response..Wow what lovely comments, we are quite overwhelmed. Thank you. Glad that you found the past reviews helpful, this is a new addition to the website for 2013 and is proving popular, I have said that I will not cherry pick but will post all genuine reviews. Good to know that The Old Bear is worth a visit and under new management. We are delighted to hear that we will see you again. Best wishes, Penny

Richard, Chris & Roy, Nov 2013Perfection.

Excellent location. A warm very comfortable cottage with very friendly and knowledgeable hosts. Lovely chocolate cake with tea on arrival was a nice touch. Lots of information about local attractions. A small but well equipped kitchen. We really enjoyed our holiday.

Response..Thank you for your kind remarks. As you say the kitchen is small, which is why we draw attention to that on the website, but well equipped with the exception of a freezer. Best wishes for the rest of your holiday and we look forward to meeting you again on a future trip. Penny

Mary & Jim, Nov 2013Wonderful Holiday,

Having never visited Wiltshire before, we were all very much looking forward to our short break, which did not fail to disappoint. To begin with the cottage was absolutely beautiful,so luxurious, we fell in love with it straight away. Penny & Peter were so helpful and friendly too, along with all the locals we met. Our favourite places included Castle Combe, Lacock and Gold Hill (Shaftesbury) – all very picturesque. We also enjoyed looking out for the White Horses. Steeple Ashton is the perfect base for visits to a number of counties. We really did not want to leave, and would thoroughly recommend the cottage/village to anybody.

Response..It was a pleasure meeting the 3 of you and we are so pleased that you like Wiltshire so much, we often joke that it is the county people drive through to get somewhere else. The locals are very friendly and always have time to chat to our guests and give them some inside info.. I hope that you will make the long journey south and we will see you again one day. Best wishes, Penny

Dianne, Ken & Alan Thompson, Nov 2013Beautiful Cottage,

We had a very warm welcome to this lovely cottage where everything has been thoughtfully provided and beautifully presented. Penny and Peter were so helpful and informative and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. A short but sweet visit and thoroughly enjoyed – especially the chocolate cake!!

Response..We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Coachmans Cottage and liked the up-grades put in just prior to your arrival, these are all now available to see on the website. The choc. cake is generally well received and luckily freezes very well so I always have a stock in hand. It was a pleasure meeting you both and we look forward to seeing you again for a slightly longer visit. Best, Penny

Joy & Mike Gepp, Nov 2013Very warm welcome,

We had a very enjoyable stay at Coachmans Cottage and were sorry it was such a flying visit (3 nights). We found Penny and Peter to be extremely friendly and helpful and our every need was catered for in the cottage – a real ‘home from home’. The yummy home made chocolate brownie was especially appreciated by Ben and was a lovely touch on arrival. The village is delightful, we had a very nice meal in the village pub and also made time to visit the local shop run on a volunteer basis by the community. A very special place!!

Response..We are glad that you enjoyed your flying visit so much and the local hot spots…pub and shop were a hit. The popular chocolate fudge cake recipe can be found on the blog if Ben would like to have a go at making it. Good luck with the tennis and we hope to see you all again one day soon. Best wishes, Penny

Julie, John And Ben Nicol, Nov 2013A real ‘ home from home ’,

Our 16 days at Coachman’s Cottage was a most enjoyable experience and it met all our expectations – delightful village location, lots of character, tastefully presented, beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean and even including the important bits and pieces so often overlooked. The village itself is charming, with an interesting mix of period property, delightful church and lively pub. An excellent base for exploring West Wiltshire, along with parts of Somerset and Dorset. Thank you Penny and Peter for being such lovely hosts.

Response..Thanks so much for taking the time to write your kind and glowing review. We try to think of little things that guests might need but do not pack when holidaying, I know from experience that mending a button or cleaning shoes when the equipment is not to hand is a trial. We very much look forward to welcoming you back to Coachmans in the future. Best wishes, Penny

Paul Twyneham & Jayne Pattison, Oct 2013Highly Recommended,

We had hoped to find a well located cottage but found perfection. Coachmans cottage well exceeded our expectations in all respects. Not only located in an idyllic village , but beautifully designed and appointed with ever attentive hosts Penny and Peter. Thank you for a most enjoyable 3 weeks. Should we visit Wiltshire again we will book early.

Response..Thank you both for your kind words. 3 weeks in Steeple Ashton and your faces where familiar in both the shop and pub and have been missed. We walk a fine line between being attentive and invasive…I hope we get it right most of the time. We very much look forward to seeing you again one day in the future. Best wishes Penny

Barry And Penny Wheeler, Oct 2013Perfection.

What a divine fortnight! The cottage was exactly what we required after a week of frantic sight seeing and shopping in London. Our every need was catered for with much appreciated advice from Penny and Peter about places to see that would interest us. The weather was lovely so were able to enjoy sitting out in the court yard. The village is beautiful with super eateries not too far away. We loved hearing the church bells ringing and would very much like to return to this wonderful cottage in the future.

Response..I am delighted that you were so pleased with Coachmans and Steeple Ashton. As you mention we had a really nice summer and it is a beautiful sunny autumn morning, the colours are begining to look fabulous we have been promised a spectacular autumn…my favourite time of the year. It is very kind of you to take the time to review especially as your trip was such a long one and it is some weeks since you left the UK. We very much hope to see you again in the future.

Jennifer and Bruce Gallagher, Oct 2013Perfect Base For Exploring,

This cottage is very special indeed, immaculate and beautifully decorated throughout with interesting creative touches in warm glowing colours and well polished wood, we loved it. The cottage is just a step away from the well stocked Village shop and local pub situated in the centre of this delightful village. Thank you to Penny and Peter for their attention to detail and genuine concern that we should have a great week. We have already booked next years holiday

Response..Thank you so much for your kind and glowing review, for once I am at a loss for words. We are looking forward to seeing you again next year when you will hopefully fit in a visit to the local weaving and patchwork group. Very pleased that you had such an enjoyable session at the Bath Thermae Spa. Penny

Carol And Julian Hague, Oct 2013 Five Star Heaven,

The title says it all ~ truly lovely cottage ~ spotlessly clean, comfortable, well equipped, quiet and cosy. Penny and Peter were such helpful hosts recommending historic sites and great pubs. The pub in the village, within walking distance, was so friendly and the food really good. We can’t praise this cottage highly enough. We will certainly be back.

Response..What a lovely review. Thank you. Glad we were a help recommending places to visit and the pubs locally, lucky for us that as we might lose one good pub in the area another opens so still plenty of choice. We look forward to seeing you again at Coachmans Cottage soon. Penny.

Carole Dawson, Sept 2013DELIGHTFUL COTTAGE,

This is the cottage you would wish for if you could write your own specification, and what’s more, it gets better every year (this is our third visit & we’ve already booked for next year). Improvements this time include wi-fi and the four poster, in a peaceful room most conducive to a lie-in.
Penny & Peter are perfect hosts, the cottage is immaculate, and its setting is splendid. The village shop is in the top ten of its kind in our experience, Coachmans Cottage too!

Response..Thank you for your kind review. Glad you liked the improvements this year, as you say always ongoing and we haven’t finished yet. Is is always a pleasure to welcome back returning guests and thanks for next year. Yes the shop is a big plus. Best, Penny

Sue & Tony Mansell, Aug 2013Look No Further,

This charming cottage had all we could ask for. A real treat to find such a well equipped “home away from home” and spotlessly clean into the bargain. The village folk very friendly and the surrounding area offered so much wonderful sight-seeing. Ladies, ask Penny about a great hairdresser! Gracious and helpful hosts – thank you, Penny, Jo and Peter.

Response..Helen and Peter, Thank you for your warm review, we very much enjoyed meeting you both and having so much insight on Australia and France. Yes it is nice to have a dependable hairdresser to recommend! We look forward to welcoming you back to Coachmans in the future when we will find you more “hidden gems”. Penny

Peter & Helen Smith, Australia, Aug 2013 Home Away From Home,

Our family of 4 spent a week at Coachmans Cottage last month. The cottage was immaculate and comfortable. It stayed nice and cool during the hottest week in 10 years. Out teen boys put the wireless internet to good use. Short walk to the village shop and Long Arms Pub with good food and tables in the back garden. It was an easy drive to many tourist attractions. We enjoyed talking with Penny and Peter and appreciated their advice on what to see and where to eat.

Response..Nice to hear from you again, we really enjoyed your stay and meeting you, your enthusiasm for everything was great. We hope to see you again on your next trip to the UK and maybe we can point you in the right direction to do some sailing (not in landlocked Steeple Ashton!)

Whitney & Mike Jordan, USA, Oct 2013 Perfect Week At The Cottage,

We have just spent a week in June in this wonderful cottage in a perfect village setting. The accommodation was everything we would hope for and was situated in a quiet corner of this lovely village. The local pub was very friendly and offered a good, varied menu. our first time in the area, lots to see and do. Thank you Penny for your warm welcome and attention.

Response..Thank you for taking the time to review. I am so pleased that the cottage met with your expectations and it is always nice to hear good reports of the Longs Arms, your timing was perfect to be here when the Holt Morris Dancers performed outside the pub, a real west country treat. I hope that we will welcome you to Steeple Ashton one day soon. Penny

David & Janet Woods, July 2013Wonderful Cottage,

My friend and I had a wonderful two weeks in Coachman’s with fresh breakfast croissants from the village shop. The cottage is lovely, comfortable and just like the photos on the website. Steeple Ashton is exactly as you would imagine an English village to be and there is lots to do around the area. We are happy to recommend the cottage.

Response..It was a pleasure to meet you both and I am so pleased that the village and cottage delivered for you. The weather was really kind to you, the start of summer at last. It is nice to know that guests find the website honest. I hope that we will be able to welcome you back again in the future. Best wishes, Penny.

Cherilyn And Suzanne, July 2013Just Like The Photos,

We found a real gem of a cottage with Coachmans in Steeple Ashton. Very comfortably furnished in keeping with the style of a real Coach House conversion. Spotlessly clean, well equipped, and with a lovely log burning fire to keep you warm for a romantic evening in. Penny and Peter were the perfect hosts. The village was everything you could wish for – picturesque and olde worlde – just like something from Midsommer Murders, only the locals are friendly! Plenty of National Trust properties nearby to keep you busy for a week in any weather. We will certainly recommend this beautiful cottage to our friends.

Response..I am so glad that you enjoyed your stay in Coachmans. The wood burning stove has proved a positive asset, installed last spring. We love to help guests with a little local knowledge and it was nice to hear that you had a super lunch at The Courts Gardens in Holt.
It was a great pleasure meeting you both and I hope we will tempt you back on your second trip around Britain.

Ian And Libby Hill, May 2013 A real gem !!

Coachman’s Cottage is lovely. It is tastefully furnished and is in a beautiful and friendly village. Just a few minutes walk from the cottage is a good local pub and a superb village shop. The cottage is ideally situated to visit lots of interesting historic sites in the area. We would certainly recommend Coachman’s Cottage where you can be certain of being taken care of by Penny and her father.

Response..I am so pleased that you were happy during your week spent in Coachmans Cottage and with Steeple Ashton village. The locals roared with laughter at your remark that the popular village shop might be a dating agency! We very much look forward to welcoming you both back again one day soon.
Best wishes, Penny.

Yvonne Haigh, May 2013Tastefully furnished, beautiful friendly village,

Needing a place to stay for the weekend for my son’s wedding I chose Coachmans Cottage. It proved ideal. Well appointed and charmingly furnished, it was but a short step away from the village centre. We would recommend our choice to anyone.
